Living With Children/Teenagers - Parenting Skills Courses
Living With Children and Living With Teenagers are free parenting skills groups coordinated by NHS Derbyshire County to help families live happily together.
Being a parent or carer can be hard work at times - for all of us! Most families will face challenging behaviour from their children at some point, and knowing where to turn to for help and support can be difficult.
We offer free parenting groups to any parent or carer who has a child/children aged 0-8 yrs or 9-15 yrs. We aim to build parental confidence and help families develop their parenting skills, to cope better with some of the challenges that we all face at one time or another.
Living With Children/Teenager courses run throughout Derbyshire and form part of Derbyshire County Parenting Strategy.

Who are these courses for?
Any parent or carer with children aged between 1 and 15 years, who may want some reassurance about their ability to parent, as well as support with everyday parenting skills. Our courses are aimed at parents/carers of children in two age ranges:
- Living With Children - 0-8 yrs (6 week course)
- Living With Teenagers - 9-15yrs (8 week course)
What do we talk about?
Both courses focus on improving parental self confidence; including self esteem, communication, feelings and stress management. We also focus on problem solving, setting boundaries and positive discipline, including behaviour management strategies to improve and maintain relationships within the family.
Living With Teenagers courses also offer support and information on specific issues relating to Sex & Relationships and Drugs, both of which can be a concern for parents/carers with this age group.
All parents/carers attending sessions will have the chance to give feedback about how they have put into practice what they have learned and how successful it has been.
At least two trained facilitators will run each course for up to 15 parents. The group leaders come from local services including NHS Derbyshire County, Derbyshire County Council and Local Voluntary Services eg: NCH Mediation - all of whom have received specialist 'Living with...' programme training.
When and where will courses be held?
All courses run one session every week in a variety of venues across the county. We do not offer courses during school holidays.
Each session lasts for about 2 -3 hours, including half an hour to enjoy a free buffet and to relax and make friends. The courses take place in the morning, afternoon or evening, so there will be a variety of options available to you.
Places will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. You will be sent an application form to complete and return to confirm your place. To find out when the next courses start, book a place or find out more, see the leaflet below or call the Living With Children/Teenagers team on 01246 514 977 or 01246 514 978.
What about Childcare and Transport?
Free creche or funded childcare is provided if required at every course. These will be run by experienced staff who will provide structured play activities for your children.
If you don't have your own transport, we can also provide free transport to get you to and from the course every week.
All this information is available on the Living With Children/Teenagers Leaflet. There are also other parenting courses available for you to attend.
